Support from Salt Spring Island, B.C.

Brian Smallshaw, Jan Slakov, Andrew Lewis, and an inspired Dutch tourist stand in Fulford Harbour, Salt Spring Island, B.C. showing their support for a moratorium on bottom-trawling.

They point out that the negative impact of bottom-trawling is a result of both the physical destruction of benthic habitat and the by-catch of untargeted species. Between 1996 and 2002, the B.C. bottom trawling fleet discarded 68 million kilograms of by-catch, the amount it would take to fill a convoy of pickup trucks, bumper to bumper, between Vancouver and Prince George (Living Oceans Society, www.livingoceans.org).
